STUDYING FRM PART 1 & CFA LEVEL 1 SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Hi,

I plan to take FRM Part 1 in May 2016 and CFA Level 1 in June 2016. I have the following queries:-

1. Should i start with FRM or CFA first?

2. Do i study CFA/FRM seperately or as follows(this is the plan iv come up with) - All 4 topics of FRM followed by FRA, Quants, Fixed Income, Equity & Economics from CFA. Revise numerous times and lastly doing the remainder of the CFA topics. Your feedback please.

3. Once i'm done studying both CFA/FRM in either order what kind of a revision pattern do i follow ie revise for both exams separately or combine various topics of CFA/FRM and revise simultaneously.

My biggest worry is revising for a either of the Exams for a couple of weeks and coming back to the other after a couple of weeks and not remembering the material.

FYI i plan to study full time about 10 hours a day.

Apologies for the length of the query. Thanks in anticipation.

Regards,
Stephen Matthews

Hi Stephen,
1. i should say start with one you feel you are comfortable with i mean what you feel like,if you are more enthusiastic about FRM and feel like you have more interesting stuff to study in FRM then start with FRM otherwise if you are more enthusiastic about CFA and feel like you have more interesting stuff to study in CFA then start with it.I started with CFA first when I gave the exams in 2011.
2. Yes I like Revise numerous times ,yes its the most important thing Revision which i think is very important for exam success, yes its good if you revise the most important topics of FRA, Quants, Fixed Income, Equity & Economics from CFA and the FRM also.I think you can go with either option here.I however studied for CFA/FRM separately.
3.Yes you can revise simultaneously.
I would tell you about my preparation, that i started with CFA Level 1 covered and studied all the topics, then i studied for FRM level 1 covered and studied all the topics, then i did the revision before the exams like 15-20 days are more than enough before the exams to go through the material again before the exam.Like FRM was on 19th November so started on 1st November for revision till the exam and then the CFA Level I was on 11th Dec so I started on 20th Nov for revision of CFA Level I till the exam day on 11th Dec.

This was the conversation i had with SM may be helpful for others,
1. While first studying the FRM curriculum did you attempt only BT end of chapter questions or questions for the respective topic from the Q Bank as well?

Yes I did attempted end of chapter questions after studying a particular chapter.I consulted questions for the respective topic from the Q Bank after completing the entire curriculum that is did practice from this Q Bank. But your main focus should be end of chapter questions you should revise them after during your revision. Before the exam you can go through as much practice questions as possible.
2. During the last 19-20 days of your revision routine for FRM did you focus primarily on question solving and mocks or was it a conceptual revision? Also how much of the questions from the BT Q Bank did you manage to cover during your initial study process?

My focus was conceptual revision, yes i did solved mocks once i have revised all the major things or topics. But please give majority of time to conceptual revision.
I covered almost 5-7 mocks they are more than enough.
focus only on BT Q Banks/Mocks and do it multiple times.
thanks

Depends on your background. If you've taken finance courses in grad/undergrad CFA L1 will be pretty much a refresh and can be gamed. I remember punting the entire Econ section because it was only 5-10% of the exam. Seems more difficult w/ the FRM. There are only 4 topics and any concept from those 4 can be tested.
